Baleal – Peniche, Portugal

Welcome to the chosen home base of Mahalo. Surfing and living the life for several years here Mahalo knows why it is one of THE surf destinations in the world!

The little fishing town of Peniche is located in the center of west Portugal, about 89 km north of the country capital, Lisbon. Peniche is one of if not the most important surf region along the Portuguese coastline. It has become one surf epicentre and is also called the capital of the waves. This little European fishing village is home to Supertubos or Supertubes, which hosts the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal.
Mixed in with the old-world charm, modern day Peniche’s restaurants, boutique hotels, and beach bars are built around the surf scene. Be our guest and experience this place like a local immersed in the waves, colours, food and sounds of Portugal. You can relax and concentrate on your surfing.

The Surfers Lodge Peniche is the place to be. The location near Baleal beach and the north coast is easy to go for a first surf before breakfast as well as to walk to the village for dinner. The lodge is just a cool place where you can feel home, with many different areas, living room with a fireplace, a terrace with a Jacuzzi and a pool for those nice sunny days in Peniche.
There is also a wide variety of villas and apartments for rent in Baleal. We have several properties listed here that we love and recommend.

With the most diverse and consistent area and our surf expertise we will make sure that you take the most out of your experience during your stay in Peniche / Baleal.  This peninsula offers beach breaks, sandbars, reefs, point-breaks and mixed spots. All of these surfing options are located within a 15km radius from The Surfers Lodge Peniche and work with various swell exposures as well as wind and tide conditions.
We recommend Peniche for all levels of surfers depending on the season and surfing conditions. It can make up for an amazing year round surfing region.

Peniche has been known as a fishermen’s village for hundreds of years. Every night merchants from all over the world bargained for their catch in one of Portugal’s largest fish markets in Peniche’s harbour. So as you might guess, the sea food and the fish in Peniche is fresh as it can be, you definitely should try it. It’s also the dish Portuguese chefs know the best.
Tasca do Joel: Hidden in the back of Peniche it is our favourite and the most well known restaurant which won hundreds of prizes already. Fish and meat in all variations. They also run a store for wine and Portuguese local products. This place is for sure worth the visit while you are in Peniche!

The time during the MEO Rip Curl Pro is without a doubt the most exciting time of the year to visit Peniche and the famous beach of Supertubos. This little fisher town fills with crowds of thousands of spectators from all over the world coming to watch some incredible surfing!
