Make it one of these unforgettable experiences. The Southern Atolls are located in the remote south west. The Maldives has pristine waters where you will have the chance to meet and see more sea life thriving in its natural habitat than in any other place in the world.
Maldives is composed by plenty of gorgeous Islands; 26 atolls that house 1192 coral islands, 200 of which are habited. This rare ocean setup creates a truly pristine playground for aquatic and beach-going activities.

Outer Atolls remain untouchable surfing frontier. Most of the surf breaks are concentrated in Laamu, Thaa, Dhalu and Meemu atolls. There are several high quality breaks and cruising is the ultimate way to conquer those empty surf breaks. The variety of waves is huge – abundant and perfect as you dream about it!
One of the most famous or well known wave is named “Ying Yang”. This unique break is a consistent right hander located southeast of the Atoll. The wave transitions between soft and mellow outside with an easy takeoff, then bends in the corner mush out for a while till it wraps into a perfect barreling wave with some serious shade sessions. The inside section can be long and tubular. Definitely a wave that worths the visit.
There are five other breaks around Ying Yang:, Jetty (Intermediate / Left); “Maamendhoo,” (Intermediate / Left); “Petrol Head” (Intermediate / Left), and “Gaadhoo,” (Experienced / Left). Laamu Atoll has a few better known spots including Refugee’s Lefts, Refugee’s Rights and Bedhuge.
The Mahalo Surf Experience Coach and local onsite boat guides are super knowledgeable and always willing to take you to the right spot on the right day.
Some of the stand-out spots at Thaa Atoll include Malik’s, Finnimas, Outside Mikado and Inside Mikado.
Also Meamu and Dhaalu has some spots that make the trip back worth like Hocus Pocus, Muli, Vodi and Kasabu.
These waves in the Maldives are usually small from chest high the typical Maldivian wave rolls up like most point breaks with workable corners, fun pocket, barrels and long rides. But on good occasions the waves go well overhead and the swells will hit with some power.
The best time for surfing is from April to October when wind and swell are at their optimum. The biggest advantage of this region is the water: clear, warm, uncrowded, clean, full of life and not to be missed by any adventure-loving person.
